Christmas tree quilt

Your Christmas tree skirt need not always be a skirt. I have found over the years that I have moved away from all my perfectly arranged and sewn skirts and moved towards the massed bunched quilts and old blankets gathered and piled around the base of the tree.

I guess it is the nostalgic retreat to the piles of imitation snow blankets that you always saw wrapped around the base of the trees in the store windows growing up. I like the look so much more. I don’t want to see the tree holder, unless the holder is one of the incredible cast iron urns that I have been collecting. Then I’m all for it.

If you feel up to it, a small tabletop quilt like this would be simple to make long before the holidays arrive. However, I find that for the holiday season, I have no problem raiding the linen closet and picking one of the holiday themed quilts stored in there for the tree. If I don’t want to use the quilts, I aim for the tablecloths and pick through those.

Generally after the holidays, I aim for the mega sales rack to see how incredibly cheap I can find tablecloths and napkins. Then I use them to piece for quilts. Lots of times I can buy crazy patterns for literally pennies. Wild. Absolutely fun and crazy pieces.
