Embroidery - coloring with needle and thread
Another example of how embroidery is nothing more than coloring on the lines, but with thread instead of crayons.
When you think of embroidery like crayons and your fabric as your paper, you get a wild desire to fill up all the empty space with color and shapes and a story and marvels.
And well you should! Once you begin to think like that, you find that you look at all the clip art and designs you run across on your computer in a whole new way. You evaluate all those pretty scrolls and frills and embellishments in light of “hum, can I use my handy dandy fabric transfer pen/pencil and draw this pretty design straight onto the fabric and just color it in with thread?” And the answer is YES!
As I have said before, make a run to your favorite fabric store (I am lucky enough to have a mega-JoAnns right around the corner. It’s huge, so I can find the greatest toys ever) and check out all the different methods available to transfer designs onto fabric. There are so many it will make your head spin! All you need do is print out the design you like on your printer, use the method of choice to transfer the design, then thread your needle and sit down and color in the lines.
Simple. Elegant. Fun. And if you ever doubt the popularity of these types of gifts, just look at how much money is being asked for antique samplers now. The costs are outrageous! That could be your work in one hundred years.
So, if you haven’t done it yet, take the plunge, pick yourself a pretty design and a piece of household linen, favorite old tshirt or handkerchief and try your hand at coloring with needle and thread. You might find that you truly enjoy it.
