Movie time: Synchronicity, Dark Side of the Moon and Wizard of Oz

We are in for a treat today. Now stick with me. This will get to making your own gifts, I promise.

Matching a movie to an unrelated music album is known as synchronicity.

For those that know and understand, this particular version is done by way of the Third Roar Theory, and I like the way it syncs up best.

For those that don’t understand, the idea is that the entire combination of watching the movie (Wizard of Oz) and listening to the Pink Floyd’s album (Dark Side of the Moon) depends on when exactly in the movie to start the soundtrack.

It all pivots on the roar of the MGM lion. For the record, the lion roars three times, which means that there are four (yes, 4) distinctly different camps arguing when best to hit the play button. The argument is when best to start the music; during the first roar, the second roar, the third roar (my preference), or as the lion fades to black.

Each sync produces a different result vis a vis the music and the action on the screen.

If you like the music, it is an enjoyable way to spend some time. I actually really prefer having movies like these available when I craft. I find that the music is wonderful when I am focused on what is in front of me. However, when I need a mental break, I can look up and watch the action on the screen for a few minutes.

See. I bet you wondered how I was going to bring this back around to crafts! Well, this is a great way to craft, if you are a multi-tasker, as I am. I can listen to great music, and watch a movie when I need a quick distraction.

If you find that you really enjoy synchronicity, there is a wonderful website available called the Synchronicity Arkive that actually does a bang up job of detailing various movies (all types) and soundtracks that will match (again, all types). It is an interesting and ongoing experiment in auditory and participatory art.

Synchronicity received a bad rap a long time ago as something only the stoners did. But it is really something that can be fantastically individualized form of expression - and we see that more and more since the advent of sites like YouTube and GoogleVideo.

People are talking through music and video together. It’s only lately we figured out how to listen without judgment finally (and that is still up for debate, to be honest).

This is one of those cultural things that everyone should be able to say that they have done once (watching Wizard of Oz whilst listening to Dark Side of the Moon). And the cool thing here is that some blessed soul has already done the work for you, so that you don’t even have to fuss with starting the movie and pushing buttons and timing anything just right. You can just grab a project, hit play and sit back and really get into it.

It is the height of synchronicity. Craft something and enjoy participating in a part of our cultural history.
