Playing with jewelry.

If you are a regular reader, you know I am a bench jeweler outside the computer.

If you are a new reader, you should know that I’m working on my jewelry art, which basically means that jewelry is pretty much just one big bunch of toys.

Really. shiny. toys.

Anyway, I told you about the fantastical heavy pink banded pearls I strung over Labor Day weekend:

I was going to restring these pink pearls with a diamond clasp I had tucked away waiting for just such a set. Well, I did use the clasp, but I didn’t restring the pink pearls yet. I am still wearing the pink strand, kinda testing the waters so to speak with them. They are great, and frankly, if I can get more of them, I plan on stocking them.

Having dug out the clasp, I decided to go ahead and use it.

These pearls were more stereotypical - cultured with a pink cast (although they are supposed to be cream). Again, because I love this clasp, I’m not going to sell this strand. Rather, I’m going to give them as a gift this Christmas.

The last piece I cannot wait to play with is a stone I have been sitting on for a few months now, a lovely Kunzite:

It is not huge (a mere 11×9), but I couldn’t find the pale pink tint that I so crave in a size that is large enough. I do have a 40ish carat Rose de France amethyst ring that passes for pink. I set in it in a very simplistic white gold basket setting for the time being, but I am finding that as I wear the ring, I know that this is not the forever setting, if that makes sense. Because of the size of the stone, I had to balance out the dimensions by using an immensely wide band, so the entire construction comes off as very Frank Lloyd Wright (as least to me). It’s funky looking, without a doubt, but not what I wanted as the forever destination for the amethyst.

Anyway, back to the Kunzite. The stone is a fair size - big enough to see without a doubt. I have been collecting my loose diamonds and I have enough now that I am considering setting the stone in something along the lines of Princess Diana’s engagement ring (most people will remember that jewelry reference).

I know I have pictures of the Rose de France amethyst ring, so I’ll post that. It is actually a heck of a lot of fun to wear because the stone is so outrageously large that no one believes it is real. (The stone is about 31×21mm). It’s just a hoot.
