So we are still excited for our road trip.

We are still planning our diametrically opposed road trip this holiday season. We going over the river and through the woods. Literally, to Grandmother’s house we go!

This house, at the beach in Washington state, is amazing. It was my grandparents’ vacation then retirement home. The house started as one room when we were so little, sleeping in the loft over the kitchen. Over the years, as time (and budget) allowed, my grandfather built onto the home, eventually ending up with a two floor home, along with a detached two floor garage that if I am not mistaken, is as large as the house itself (Grandpa believed in toys with motors. Believed strongly in big toys with motors!)

Anyway, I have been watching Alton Brown’s Feasting on Asphalt series (love him anyway because he’s a local boy), and I really appreciate the emphasis he is putting on America’s connection to the road trip. He talks about how Americans used to use the road as our “communication and communion.” And how the road “connects us to each other and our heritage.” He is speaking my language.

That, in part, is one of the many reasons we are so eager for our own cross-country road trip. As much as my Mister and I have enjoyed watching his travel, we look forward to doing our own driving from Georgia state to Washington state and back again.

The only hard fast tourist attraction we have planned is the Grand Canyon and the new Skywalk (be careful - the music on their web page is so annoying). If you have not heard about this, it is a glass walkway that has been constructed out and over the Grand Canyon. Yes. So you can walk out. On glass. Over. The. Grand Canyon.

Personally, I deal with a very bizarre heights issues - I am going to try to describe it, but I warn you now, it is a weird one. I can stand on heights without problems, but … looking down makes my ankles physically ache to the point of near immobility. Yeah, weird. In fact, bizarre.

But nonetheless, even with this ankle paralyzing fear of heights, we are planning on walking the new Grand Canyon Skywalk, (much like the proverbial chicken of the joke) just so that I can say I got to the other side.

We have no hard fast travel stops planned for our trip yet, only a destination on the Washington coast. If anyone has suggestions for wonderful spots on the American trail between Georgia and Washington that they think we should try, feel free to send us a note to kat at kattitudes with all the appropriate email additions in there (you know, the dot com and all the rest added in there. I never add it all in to keep the bots from harvesting addresses, but with almost forty thousand spam comments caught already by my spam blocker software, I think the addy is probably already in the system!)

We would love to hear from you. If you live somewhere in the USA between Georgia and Washington, tell us about your town. Maybe we can include it on our road trip this year.

So the Grand Canyon Skywalk is open? Wow, I remember seeing a news story on this a while back & thought; OMG, I would never be able to walk on that, lol! I never thought I was afraid of heights - but after seeing that — I just may be! Heeeheeheee! Nonetheless, your road trip sounds exciting & special! I bet you also have many wonderful memories of your grandparents. :-)
