It won’t be long.

Halloween

It is just after Labor Day weekend in the United States, traditionally marking the end of the cultural summer season and the beginning of autumn social season.

In our south, starting September first, industrious money makers rent out the empty stores in the strip malls and open cheapo Halloween preparation stores. As part of their business plan, they hire living street corner paperweights, outfit them in a poncho, sombrero and an advertisement on a pole, and strategically place them at most of the major intersections that we frequent during the course of a week.

We saw our first paperweight out this last weekend.

Around here, the company with the living streetcorner paperweights is specifically Halloween Express. The signs obviously only last two months, but within two months, surely it won’t be long before we are tired of seeing Halloween Express signs.

Maybe it is time to start thinking about doing some canning. We have been thinking about making some applesauce and apple butter this year for gifts. And besides, it is a great excuse to make the kitchen smell fantastic. And canning is one of those back to basic skills with which people should be comfortable.
