Dragon*con, the Kattitudes report.

Well, in the end, that was pleasant. It was an interesting year for us in that this year was our first handicapped access Dragon*con.

Wow. Talk about getting a chance to see the world through different eyes. Waiting 20, 30 and 45 minutes for an elevator because people will not get off to allow a wheelchair onto a crowded elevator. Hearing people complain that the wheelchair is taking up most of an aisle, they can’t get by together.

During a solo elevator trip, my sister reported that one younger man in the elevator with not one, but two wheelchairs actually complained out loud about how crowded the elevator was and that the elevator would have been so much more comfortable had some people not chosen to get on and taken the stairs instead. The woman in the second wheelchair finally responded to him by telling him “at least you have the choice”. Mercifully, the rest of the elevator ride was quick.

Strange people, though. Strange. I’ll go fetch the camera in a bit. Good times though, we did run into two of the Mister’s fraternity brothers (and a third joined in for dinner), so sat in the bar for a while and laughed while one of the brothers gathered photos of the more outlandish costumes for what I can only assume was his collection.

Actually, it was odd to run into these brothers. One is currently some sort of contractor in Iraq, and was apparently working on recruiting all of the brothers over for a tour. I have yet to hear the proposal from the Mister, so I am thinking that he might not have been sold.

Another of the fraternity brothers had changed so much that I literally did not recognize the person standing in front of me greeting me. I am one of those people that can recognize a face so quickly but honestly, ask me to place your name and all bets are off. That doesn’t mean I don’t recognize you and even remember you well. It just means that I am visually based in my memory and not hearing based. I don’t associate you with a name, I associate you with your face, if that makes sense to you.

Anyway, so here stands this man in front of me, all smiles and I knew I was supposed to recognize him. The problem being is that I went to an extremely large university and I was involved in the student politics there. That means that, while extremely (outrageously even) slim, there is a possibility of one of fifty thousand people (the population of my university) remembering my photo. So, when people walk up to me grinning like they know me, I have to rush through the “where could I have met them” mental file first - see the problem? Lots of thinking time required for an old lady at this point. Fortunately, the right neurons fired and his name popped up. Odd though - I had not seen him in years, when he was last going through his Jesus phase (hip length red hippy hair and all). I had only caught him once post Jesus phase. Yet here standing before me was a nicely attired, professionally kept man. Threw me for a loop, to be honest.

So, we had a few drinks, laughed over a number of wonderful costumes, took quite a few photos that make you pleased that the camera has a delete button, and ended up over dinner and a bottle of wine. In between we changed hotels and hotel lounges a few times and we shopping through the self-proclaimed geek aisles and came away with a few good links. We will dig out the paperwork soon too and get the links posted.

All in all, interesting. Very interesting.

Finished great jewelry. That part was wonderful too, and so the camera does need to come out of hiding. Expect that shortly too.
