My family loves this recipe. I got it from my mother, who got it from her mother-in-law. Apparently, this cake was popular in the Depression, as it does not call for eggs. The best thing I can tell you about this cake-keep it covered. As long as it doesn't dry out, it's a very dense chocolate taste. Good old fashioned cake taste.
Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda, and cocoa together into a 9 x 13 inch ungreased cake pan. Make three wells. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour cold water over all, and stir well with fork. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Frost with your favorite icing.
A word about frosting: we always threw a stick of butter in with a package of confectioners sugar and some cocoa powder and mixed for ages. Toss in a smidge of vanilla and wow. I've also just sprinkled the deep dark brown color with powdered sugar and it looks wonderful.
